LIM homeobox protein 8 (LHX8) is a transcription factor belonging to the LIM homeobox family, characterized by two LIM domains (cysteine-rich zinc finger motifs) and a DNA-binding homeodomain. LHX8 is essential for normal patterning and differentiation of various tissues, including neurons, oocytes, and craniofacial structures. In oocytes, it is required for maintenance and differentiation during early folliculogenesis, and its absence leads to rapid loss of oocytes and infertility in female mice. LHX8 plays a significant role in mammalian tooth morphogenesis and may be a candidate gene for certain congenital disorders such as cleft palate and odontoma formation. Currently, no therapeutic drugs directly target LHX8, and it is not considered a direct therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme), but rather a developmental transcription factor critical for specific biological processes.
