Overview

LIM homeobox transcription factor 1-beta (LMX1B) is a transcription factor belonging to the LIM homeodomain protein family, characterized by having two cysteine-rich LIM domains at its amino terminus (important for protein–protein interactions) and a DNA-binding homeodomain[2]. LMX1B plays a crucial role in embryonic dorso-ventral patterning of vertebrate limbs, kidney development (particularly podocyte differentiation and basement membrane formation), and the development of serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system[1][2]. Mutations or loss-of-function in LMX1B cause Nail-patella syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the nails, knees, elbows, kidneys, and sometimes the eyes and nervous system[1][2]. LMX1B is essential for proper expression of several development-associated genes and for normal tissue patterning across multiple organ systems[2].
