Overview

Limbal epithelial stem cells are critical adult unipotent progenitors responsible for lifelong renewal and repair of human corneal epithelium. Their deficiency leads directly to severe ocular surface disease with significant morbidity. Advances in bioengineering have enabled successful clinical therapies based on isolation/expansion/transplantation approaches targeting this unique cell population for sight restoration in affected patients.
