Limbic system targets

The limbic system is a complex network of interconnected brain structures, including the amygdala, hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, and cingulate gyrus, that serves as the primary center for emotion, memory, and behavioral regulation (StatPearls, 2023). The term 'limbic system targets' does not refer to a single molecule but rather a broad category of receptors, transporters, and enzymes located within these regions that are targeted by psychotropic medications (NIH, 2022). These targets include GABA-A receptors for anxiolysis, serotonin transporters for mood regulation, and NMDA receptors for rapid antidepressant effects and cognitive modulation (PubMed, 2021). Dysregulation of limbic circuitry is a hallmark of various psychiatric and neurological conditions, such as major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and temporal lobe epilepsy (Wikipedia, 2024).
