LIN28A pseudogene 1 (LIN28AP1) is a non-coding pseudogene homologous to the protein-coding gene LIN28A. Pseudogenes like LIN28AP1 do not produce functional proteins but may have regulatory roles, such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) to influence the expression of their parental gene by sequestering shared microRNAs. However, LIN28AP1 itself is not recognized as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or any other druggable protein or gene family member. Instead, research focuses on the protein-coding LIN28A gene, which is an RNA-binding protein involved in stem cell differentiation, self-renewal, developmental timing, and is implicated in cancer biology and regenerative medicine. The term “LIN28AP1” may be misused when referencing a drug target, as it does not correspond to a functional molecule suitable for direct therapeutic modulation. If information is sought about drug targets, disease roles, and mechanism of action, LIN28A (not its pseudogene) is the appropriate molecule to examine.
