Lipase LIP2 is an extracellular enzyme primarily studied in the yeast *Yarrowia lipolytica*, catalyzing the hydrolysis of triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol. It belongs to the triacylglycerol hydrolase family (EC 3.1.1.3) and contains an α/β-hydrolase fold with a catalytic triad (Ser-His-Asp/Glu) and a lid subdomain that regulates substrate access. While mainly known from *Yarrowia*, LIP2 homologs exist in other organisms like *Candida albicans* and certain bacteria such as *Pseudomonas chlororaphis*, where it may degrade polymers. YlLip2 has various biotechnological applications, including biodiesel production, ester synthesis, and chiral resolution. It's also being investigated as a potential enzyme replacement therapy.
