Lipid Bilayer Membrane

Molecular classification
Membrane Structure, Lipid Assembly
01

Overview

The lipid bilayer membrane is a fundamental structural component of all biological membranes, composed of two layers of lipid molecules (primarily phospholipids) arranged with hydrophilic heads facing outward and hydrophobic tails oriented inward. This arrangement provides a stable barrier that separates the cell’s internal contents from its external environment and defines the boundaries of organelles. While not a direct drug target in the traditional sense, its properties of selective permeability, fluidity, and asymmetry are crucial for many cellular processes and are exploited in drug delivery systems.

Mechanism of action

The lipid bilayer itself is not a direct drug target. Drugs interact with it through insertion, disruption, or by utilizing it as a delivery vehicle (e.g., liposomes). Amphotericin B directly interacts with membrane lipids, disrupting membrane integrity.
