Overview

In the context of viral infection, this bilayer is the site of critical events including viral attachment, membrane fusion, and budding (PMID: 11303118). Therapeutic agents targeting this structure often aim to prevent viral entry or disrupt the viral envelope to neutralize infectivity. For example, docosanol is a topically applied antiviral that incorporates into the host cell membrane to inhibit the fusion of enveloped viruses like herpes simplex virus (PMID: 8547147). Experimental compounds such as LJ001 target the viral envelope specifically by inducing lipid oxidation, providing a broad-spectrum antiviral mechanism (PMID: 20351289). However, the high similarity between viral and host membranes poses a significant challenge for systemic therapy, as drugs must distinguish between the two to avoid host cell toxicity and hemolysis (PMID: 23530144).
