Lipid-enveloped viruses are a class of viruses characterized by an outer lipid bilayer membrane, known as the viral envelope, which surrounds their protein capsid and genetic material. This envelope is typically derived from host cell membranes during viral budding and egress. The envelope contains both host-derived lipids and virus-encoded glycoproteins critical for infectivity, immune evasion, and cell entry. The lipid envelope makes these viruses more sensitive to environmental factors such as desiccation, heat, detergents, and disinfectants compared to non-enveloped viruses. Examples include influenza virus, coronaviruses (e.g., SARS-CoV-2), HIV, HBV, and HCV.
