Lipid II D-Ala-D-Ala precursor is a central molecule in bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. It serves as the immediate substrate for peptidoglycan polymerization, which is essential for maintaining bacterial cell shape and integrity. The molecule consists of a disaccharide-pentapeptide (N-acetylglucosamine–N-acetylmuramic acid linked to a pentapeptide ending in D-alanyl-D-alanine) attached to a bactoprenol lipid anchor that embeds it in the cytoplasmic membrane.
Inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis by binding to the D-Ala-D-Ala terminus, preventing incorporation into the growing cell wall.
