Lipid micelle formation refers to the self-assembly process by which amphiphilic molecules spontaneously organize into spherical aggregates called micelles when dispersed in an aqueous environment. In these structures, the hydrophilic head groups face outward toward the surrounding water, while the hydrophobic tails are sequestered in the interior core of the micelle. This process is driven by the hydrophobic effect and occurs above the critical micelle concentration (CMC). Micelles are essential for solubilizing nonpolar substances in aqueous environments, facilitating processes such as fat digestion and drug delivery.
