Overview

Lipid molecules are a diverse group of organic compounds characterized by their insolubility in water and solubility in nonpolar solvents. They include fats, oils, waxes, sterols (such as cholesterol), fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), phospholipids, glycolipids, and other related molecules. Lipids are not polymers like proteins or nucleic acids but are often formed from the chemical linking of smaller building blocks such as fatty acids and glycerol.
