Lipid peroxidation inhibition

01

Overview

Lipid peroxidation inhibition refers to strategies aimed at preventing or reducing oxidative damage to lipids within cell membranes caused by reactive oxygen species. This process is central in many diseases involving oxidative stress and tissue damage. Inhibition can be achieved through direct scavenging of radicals by antioxidants, enzymatic detoxification pathways, or reinforcement of membrane lipids against oxidation. The primary products are lipid hydroperoxides which can further degrade into toxic aldehydes such as malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxynonenal if unchecked.

Mechanism of action

Neutralization of free radicals and reactive oxygen species to prevent initiation or propagation of lipid peroxidation chain reactions; enzymatic reduction of hydroperoxides by selenoproteins and other enzymes. Drugs act as radical scavengers or enhance endogenous antioxidant defenses.
