Overview

Lipid rafts are specialized, highly ordered microdomains within the plasma membrane, enriched in cholesterol, glycosphingolipids (such as gangliosides), and specific proteins. In mast cells, these lipid rafts play a pivotal role in organizing signaling molecules and modulating key cellular processes including degranulation, endocytosis, development, recruitment, and maintenance of cell structure. Disruption of lipid raft integrity—by altering cholesterol content or fatty acid composition—can impair receptor localization. Conversely, certain bacterial toxins exploit raft aggregation to trigger aberrant mast cell activation.
