Target intelligence / Profile preview
Lipid rafts are small, dynamic microdomains within the plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells. They are enriched in cholesterol and sphingolipids, forming more ordered and tightly packed regions compared to the surrounding membrane. These domains float freely within the liquid-disordered bilayer but can cluster to form larger, ordered platforms. They serve as organizing centers for membrane protein trafficking, signal transduction, and regulation of neurotransmission. Alterations in lipid raft composition or function have been implicated in various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, cancer progression, and cardiovascular diseases.
