Lipocalin-15 (LCN15)

Target
LCN15
Molecular classification
Lipocalin family, Extracellular protein
01

Overview

Lipocalin-15 (LCN15) is a small, secreted protein belonging to the lipocalin family, a class of β-barrel proteins specialized in binding small hydrophobic molecules[1][3][4]. LCN15 is specifically and abundantly expressed in Bowman's glands within the olfactory mucosa and secreted into the olfactory mucus[4]. Unlike other lipocalins with roles in transport, immune modulation, and signaling, the primary recognized function of LCN15 is as a constituent of olfactory mucus, potentially supporting olfactory tissue health and serving as a marker of olfactory gland activity[4]. Its pronounced localization and abundance in the olfactory cleft reflect its potential importance in maintaining the microenvironment of the olfactory epithelium. LCN15 is absent or significantly reduced in respiratory mucus. Diminished LCN15 levels correlate with olfactory mucosal atrophy and idiopathic olfactory loss, indicating biomarker potential for olfactory gland function but not established links to common systemic diseases or pharmacological targeting[4].

Biological functions

Likely involved in small hydrophobic molecule bindingComponent of olfactory mucus (suggesting a possible role in olfaction or mucosal protection)Potentially involved in modulation of the olfactory epithelial environment and homeostasis
03

Disease associations

Decreased levels in olfactory loss and in older individuals suggest a potential link to olfactory dysfunction, but no direct connection to specific systemic diseases is currently established
04

Biomarkers

Indicator of Bowman's gland activity in the olfactory mucosaReduced levels in the olfactory mucus of older individuals or those with idiopathic olfactory deficits, suggesting its use as a biomarker for olfactory epithelial integrity
