Lipophilic Toxin Sequestration

Molecular classification
Physicochemical process, Detoxification mechanism
01

Overview

Lipophilic toxin sequestration, or the "lipid sink" effect, is a process where lipophilic toxins are sequestered into a lipid phase, typically achieved by administering intravenous lipid emulsions (ILE). This reduces the free concentration of toxin available to interact with target tissues, mitigating toxicity. It is used in the treatment of acute poisoning by highly lipophilic drugs and toxins. Dietary nonabsorbable fats can also be used to bind mobilized toxins within the gut for fecal elimination.
