Lipopolysaccharide Core Glycolipid (LPS Core Glycolipid)

Target
LPS Core Glycolipid
Molecular classification
Glycolipid, Oligosaccharide
01

Overview

The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) core glycolipid is a central structural component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. It forms part of the larger LPS molecule, linking lipid A to the O-antigen or terminating at the cell surface if the O-antigen is absent. The core oligosaccharide can be divided into two subregions: the inner core (highly conserved, containing Kdo and Hep) and the outer core (more variable, composed of hexoses). It provides structural integrity, acts as a permeability barrier, and plays a role in immune interactions and bacterial virulence. Variations in its structure influence antibiotic resistance, immunogenicity, and susceptibility to host defenses.
