Overview

Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and Lipoteichoic Acid (LTA) are key components of bacterial cell membranes, found in Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, respectively. LPS, located in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, consists of O-antigen, core polysaccharide, and Lipid A, and acts as a permeability barrier and potent immune stimulator. LTA, anchored in the cytoplasmic membrane of Gram-positive bacteria, is involved in cell wall maintenance, ion homeostasis, and modulation of host interactions. Both molecules are critical for bacterial survival and represent important targets for antimicrobial agents and immunomodulatory therapies. Variability in their structures allows bacteria to evade host immunity and develop resistance to antimicrobial agents.
