Lipoprotein A (Lp(a))

Target
Lp(a)
Molecular classification
Lipoprotein, Apolipoprotein
01

Overview

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a lipoprotein particle structurally similar to LDL, but with an additional protein, apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)], covalently attached. Elevated Lp(a) levels are an independent genetic risk factor for cardiovascular diseases due to its roles in atherogenesis, thrombogenesis, and inflammation. It acts as a carrier for cholesterol and oxidized phospholipids. The precise physiological function of Lp(a) remains unclear.
