Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a secreted enzyme that hydrolyzes oxidized phospholipids and platelet activating factor (PAF), generating pro-inflammatory mediators. Primarily produced by inflammatory cells and transported by LDL and HDL, Lp-PLA2 is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular diseases and serves as a potential therapeutic target for vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis. Unlike general inflammatory markers, Lp-PLA2 is a vascular-specific biomarker.
Inhibition of Lp-PLA2 enzymatic activity to reduce vascular inflammation and prevent the formation of proatherogenic lipid mediators.
