Lipoxygenases (LOXs) are a family of non-heme iron-containing enzymes that catalyze the dioxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, producing hydroperoxides. These enzymes are found in plants, animals, and some prokaryotes, with diverse physiological and pathophysiological roles. Dysregulated LOX activity is implicated in inflammatory diseases, asthma, certain cancers, neurodegenerative disorders, and genetic skin disorders like ichthyosis. Pharmacological targeting, especially inhibition, of specific LOXs is under investigation for therapeutic purposes.
