Overview
Lipoxygenases (LOXs) are a family of non-heme iron-containing enzymes that catalyze the dioxygenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids to form hydroperoxides. These hydroperoxides serve as precursors for various bioactive lipid mediators involved in cell signaling. LOXs are implicated in several diseases including asthma, cancer and skin disorders. Pharmacological inhibitors are under development for treating these conditions.
