The lipoxygenase pathway refers to a series of biochemical reactions catalyzed by the family of lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes. These are non-heme iron-containing dioxygenases that insert molecular oxygen into polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as arachidonic acid and linoleic acid, resulting in the formation of hydroperoxy derivatives. The pathway is central to the biosynthesis of various lipid mediators, including leukotrienes, hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs), and specialized pro-resolving mediators.
