Liver function pathways

01

Overview

Liver function pathways" is a nonspecific term encompassing numerous molecular networks in the liver that underlie its major physiological duties. These pathways include, but are not limited to, drug metabolism (phase I/II/III enzymes, such as cytochrome P450s and UGTs), lipid and carbohydrate metabolism (regulated by enzymes and transcription factors), regulation of bile acid synthesis and transport (e.g., CYP7A1, transporters like MRP2), regeneration and repair (mediated by Wnt/β-catenin, Hippo/YAP/TAZ, and ALR signaling), and immune signaling (Kupffer cells, hepatocyte cytokine responses). Dysregulation or mutation of these pathways contributes to a broad spectrum of hepatic diseases, including fatty liver disease, drug-induced hepatotoxicity, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Because this is not a single molecule or druggable protein but a collective concept, it cannot be cataloged as a "target" in the strict pharmacological sense.
