Overview

Liver metabolic function refers to the collective biochemical processes performed by the liver to maintain systemic homeostasis, including the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins (StatPearls, 2023). It is a physiological process rather than a single molecular target, involving thousands of enzymes and signaling pathways (NIH, 2022). The liver plays a critical role in glucose regulation via gluconeogenesis and glycogen storage, as well as in the synthesis of cholesterol and bile acids (PubMed, 2021). Dysfunction in these metabolic activities is a primary driver of diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and type 2 diabetes (NIH, 2022). While the function itself is not a drug target, specific components like HMG-CoA reductase or PPAR receptors are targeted by drugs to modulate hepatic output (StatPearls, 2023). Monitoring this function through biomarkers like ALT and AST is essential for assessing both disease progression and drug-induced liver injury (PubMed, 2021).
