Target intelligence / Profile preview
Ascendant Yang, more formally known as Liver Yang Ascending (Gan Yang Shang Kang), is a diagnostic pattern or syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) rather than a specific molecular target, receptor, or enzyme [2, 10]. It describes a state of physiological imbalance where the Yang energy of the liver rises uncontrollably, typically due to a deficiency in Liver Yin or Kidney Yin that fails to anchor it [5, 8]. Clinically, this pattern is strongly associated with symptoms such as hypertension, throbbing headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, and irritability [1, 7]. While not a single molecule, modern integrative research often correlates this syndrome with overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, dysregulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), and vascular endothelial dysfunction [6, 7]. Therapeutic strategies in TCM involve subduing the Yang using heavy, anchoring medicinal substances like magnetite or abalone shell, alongside herbs that nourish the underlying Yin deficiency [4, 11]. Because it represents a systemic state or syndrome rather than a single protein or gene, it does not fit the criteria for a canonical therapeutic target in conventional drug discovery [2, 10].
Therapeutic intervention focuses on anchoring or subduing the rising Yang energy while simultaneously nourishing the underlying Yin deficiency to restore systemic balance [2, 4].
