The LMP1/LMP2 peptide-HLA class I complex is a molecular structure formed when short peptides derived from Epstein-Barr Virus proteins Latent Membrane Protein 1 or 2 (LMP1/LMP2) are bound and presented by human HLA class I molecules (most commonly HLA-A*11, HLA-B*07, etc.) on the surface of infected or malignant cells. This complex is central for immune surveillance as cytotoxic T cells recognize and target cells displaying these complexes for destruction. The structural diversity of peptides and the highly polymorphic nature of HLA class I alleles contribute to the intricate immune responses against EBV, and enable both immune defense and mechanisms of viral immune escape. These complexes are key immunotherapeutic targets, especially in vaccine and T cell therapy design for EBV-associated cancers.
