Overview

The local dentin–pulp–microbial environment is a complex biological niche comprising the mineralized dentin, the vascularized and innervated dental pulp, and the colonizing microbiota, typically organized in biofilms (Goldberg et al., 2011, PMID: 21357835). This environment is the primary site for the pathogenesis of dental caries and endodontic infections, where the crosstalk between microbial pathogens and host immune defenses determines the transition from reversible to irreversible pulpitis (Hahn & Huang, 2007, PMID: 17185120). Therapeutic interventions in this space do not target a single molecule but rather aim to modulate the entire ecosystem by eliminating pathogens and promoting the regenerative capacity of the pulp-dentin complex (Zhu et al., 2015, PMID: 25634924). Common treatments involve the use of biocidal irrigants and bioactive materials like Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) to induce dentin bridge formation. Because it represents a multi-component tissue and microbial system rather than a discrete protein or receptor, it is considered an incorrect entry for a specific molecular target.
