Local hyperthermia is a cancer treatment technique in which a specific area (usually a tumor) is heated to a therapeutic temperature (commonly 40-45°C), using external devices such as radiofrequency, microwaves, or ultrasound, to preferentially kill malignant cells with minimal damage to normal tissue. It can be delivered externally for superficial tumors or with probes/interstitial methods for deeper tumors. The main uses are for a range of localized tumors, especially when combined with chemotherapy or radiation. Its mechanisms include direct cytotoxicity to cancer cells, alteration of tumor metabolism, and induction of heat shock proteins that can enhance immune recognition and response. While not widely available, local hyperthermia is supported as adjunctive therapy for certain cancers and is being actively investigated for broader applications.
Local hyperthermia involves direct thermal destruction of tumor cells via apoptosis and necrosis. It also causes immunostimulation through heat shock protein release on tumor cells and provides synergistic enhancement of chemotherapy and radiotherapy effects.
