Local immune response

Local immune response refers to the complex set of immune mechanisms—including innate and adaptive components—that act rapidly and specifically at the site of pathogen entry, such as the skin or mucosal surfaces, to contain and eliminate infectious agents before systemic spread[1][2]. This process relies on multiple physical, chemical, and cellular defenses, including epithelial barriers, resident immune cells (e.g., macrophages, dendritic cells), cytokines, secretory antibodies (such as IgA at mucosal sites), and coordinated interactions within local microenvironments[1][2][3][5]. “Local immune response” is a descriptive term for this phenomenon and does not represent a discrete, single molecular entity; accordingly, it is not a direct drug target or biomarker in itself.
