The local immune response in the bladder mucosa is a complex, highly coordinated process involving both innate and adaptive immunity. This response is critical for defending against pathogens, particularly during urinary tract infections (UTIs), and also plays a role in conditions such as bladder cancer and interstitial cystitis. Key components include neutrophils, macrophages, mast cells, dendritic cells, NK cells, and T cells. Molecular pathways involve TLRs, TNFα, interleukins, and chemokines. The adaptive response is typically Th2-biased, but can be shifted toward Th1 with adjuvants. Therapeutic targeting focuses on harnessing this immune response, such as in BCG therapy for bladder cancer.
