Overview

Local skin and microbial membrane components refers to the collective molecular structures on the human skin and the cell membranes of microorganisms that serve as the primary site of action for topical antiseptic and antimicrobial agents (StatPearls, 2023). Drugs such as chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine interact with these components to provide both immediate and persistent antimicrobial activity (PubChem, 2024). By binding to skin proteins, these agents remain localized at the site of application, while their interaction with microbial membranes leads to structural disruption, leakage of cytoplasmic contents, and rapid cell death (Frontiers in Microbiology, 2022). This broad-spectrum mechanism is essential for surgical site preparation, wound management, and the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (StatPearls, 2023). The non-specific nature of this target allows for a wide range of activity against bacteria, fungi, and some viruses, although it also necessitates careful consideration of skin integrity and potential irritation (NIH, 2023).
