Overview

The “wound microenvironment” encompasses the local arrangement of cells (immune, endothelial, fibroblasts), extracellular matrix (ECM), cytokines, and growth factors that collectively regulate wound healing. Modulation refers to therapeutic intervention targeting these elements—often using biomaterials, bioactive molecules, or biological products—to improve tissue repair, resolve inflammation, stimulate angiogenesis, and support regeneration. Biomaterials (e.g., ECM mimics, hydrogels) are developed to alter cell adhesion, cytokine gradients, and immune cell behavior. Approaches focus on controlling the balance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory conditions, optimizing ECM remodeling, and promoting wound closure and regeneration. “Wound microenvironment modulation” is therefore a strategy, not a singular, structurally-defined drug target.
