Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a physical optical phenomenon rather than a biological molecule or therapeutic target. It occurs when incident light interacts with the conduction electrons of metallic nanostructures (typically gold or silver), causing them to oscillate collectively and creating a strong localized electromagnetic field enhancement. In the context of biotechnology and medicine, LSPR is primarily utilized as a highly sensitive sensing principle for biosensors and diagnostic assays. It allows for the real-time, label-free detection of molecular interactions, such as protein-protein or protein-drug binding, by monitoring changes in the refractive index near the nanoparticle surface. Because it is a method of measurement and an physical effect of nanostructures, it does not possess biological functions, disease-causing roles, or direct drug interactions in a therapeutic sense.
