Overview

Long-chain triglyceride is an ester compound formed from glycerol and three long-chain fatty acids—typically with 16, 18, or 20 carbons each. LCTs are a major form of energy storage in humans and other animals, and they constitute the bulk of edible fats and oils derived from plants and animals. They are colorless and generally solid or oily at room temperature, depending on exact structure. In metabolism, LCTs are broken down by lipases into glycerol and free fatty acids, entering pathways for energy production or biosynthesis. LCTs do not act as receptors, enzymes, or transporters, but their levels and metabolism are important for health, particularly in relation to lipid disorders, cardiovascular risk, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
