Long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs) are RNA transcripts greater than 200 nucleotides in length, transcribed from regions of the genome that do not overlap with protein-coding genes. They belong to the broader category of long non-coding RNAs and are distinguished by their genomic positioning, lack of protein-coding potential, and diverse regulatory functions, including roles in chromatin modification, transcriptional control, and genome architecture. lincRNAs have tissue-specific expression and are implicated in development, disease processes (such as cancer and neurodegeneration), and the fine-tuning of gene expression. Only a small fraction of thousands of lincRNAs have assigned biological functions, and their study is an active and rapidly evolving area of research.
