Target intelligence / Profile preview
Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1138 (LINC01138) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene located on chromosome 1q21.2. It does not encode a protein but acts at the RNA level to regulate gene expression through molecular interactions with proteins and other RNAs. LINC01138 is amplified or highly expressed in several human cancers, including glioma, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), prostate cancer, and gastric cancer. In HCC, LINC01138 acts as an oncogenic driver by physically interacting with protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), stabilizing it, and thereby promoting cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis[5]. In gastric cancer, LINC01138 activates the MAPK signaling pathway by suppressing miR-1273e, leading to enhanced proliferation and invasion of tumor cells[3]. In glioma, its roles are context-dependent: one study shows that LINC01138 is overexpressed and acts as an oncogene by sponging miR-375 and modulating the SP1 axis[1], whereas another identifies LINC01138 isoforms with tumor-suppressive effects that inhibit IGF1 expression and impede cell proliferation and invasion[2][4]. LINC01138 is investigated as both a biomarker of cancer progression and a potential therapeutic target, given its implication in cancer cell regulatory networks, but there are no known drugs directly targeting it at this time. There are notable differences in the reported functions of LINC01138, likely due to isoform variability and cancer-type specificity, making its exact biological and therapeutic role complex and context dependent[1][2][3][4][5].
Modulates the microRNA-375/SP1 axis in glioma by acting as a ceRNA[1] Promotes or represses IGF1 expression in glioma, depending on isoform and context[2][4] Activates the MAPK signaling pathway by inhibiting miR-1273e in gastric cancer[3] Physically interacts with PRMT5, enhancing its stability and activity[5]
