Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1187 (LINC01187), also known as KIDR or kidney-specific RNA, is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) highly restricted in expression to intercalated cells in the distal nephron segment of the kidney[2][3]. LINC01187 is strongly down-regulated in human kidney tissue from patients with diabetic nephropathy, rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, and in several animal models of kidney disease, suggesting a potential protective, anti-apoptotic role in renal pathophysiology[1]. In renal tumors, it is a highly lineage-specific biomarker for chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC) and related oncocytic neoplasms, with little to no expression in other kidney tumor types; this makes it diagnostically valuable for confirming cell-of-origin and tumor subtype, particularly in ambiguous cases[2][3][4]. No evidence currently links LINC01187 to direct therapeutic targeting or to drug action, and its role is primarily as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in nephropathies and renal cancers.
