Overview

Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1189 (LINC01189) is a non-coding RNA transcript, meaning it is not translated into protein but can exert regulatory roles at the RNA level[1][3][5]. LINC01189 belongs to the class of lncRNAs specifically categorized as lincRNAs, which do not overlap with protein-coding genes and exceed 200 nucleotides in length[5][7]. It is also known by aliases such as KGFLP1 and FGF7P6[1][3]. Functionally, LINC01189 acts as a tumor suppressor in several cancer types, most notably breast cancer and gastric cancer[2][4]. Mechanistically, it operates as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), sponging specific microRNAs (notably miR-586 in breast cancer and miR-155-5p in hepatocellular carcinoma), thereby regulating the availability of these microRNAs to influence their mRNA targets[2]. In breast cancer cellular models, overexpression of LINC01189 inhibits cell migration, invasion, and the EMT phenotype, while its downregulation correlates with increased tumor progression[2]. Similarly, LINC01189 is downregulated in gastric cancer tissues and cell lines, inhibiting cell proliferation, migration, and invasion when overexpressed in vitro, further supporting its tumor suppressive role[4]. There are no known direct pharmacological agents or drugs targeting LINC01189 at present, and its clinical utility is mainly as a biomarker for cancer prognosis and progression[2][4][1].
