LINC01285 is a long intergenic non-coding RNA (lincRNA) transcribed from the human X chromosome (Chr. X: 118839556-118882015, GRCh38). It does not code for a protein but acts as a molecular regulator in various biological processes. LINC01285 is significantly overexpressed in colorectal cancer tissues compared to normal tissues, with elevated expression associated with higher tumor grade, advanced clinical stage, lymph node metastasis, and poorer relapse-free survival in patients. Knockdown of LINC01285 suppresses cell proliferation, increases apoptosis, and impairs migration and invasion of colorectal cancer cells, largely through modulation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) pathway, as evidenced by changes in E-cadherin (upregulated) and N-cadherin (downregulated) expression upon silencing. Although its full functional repertoire is not completely characterized, LINC01285 is considered an emerging target for cancer diagnostics and therapy. No approved drugs currently target LINC01285 directly, but its expression may serve as a biomarker for prognosis and potential therapeutic intervention. This gene is classified as a long non-coding RNA and not a traditional receptor, enzyme, or transporter. It represents a growing class of non-protein coding regulatory RNAs involved in cancer and possibly other diseases.
Drugs targeting LINC01285 would theoretically act by modulating its expression (e.g., RNA interference, antisense oligonucleotides). Mechanistically, knockdown of LINC01285 leads to reduced cell proliferation, increased apoptosis, and decreased metastasis in colorectal cancer cells via EMT pathway modulation.
