Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1696 (LINC01696) is classified as a long intergenic non-coding RNA (lincRNA), a subclass of long non-coding RNAs that are longer than 200 nucleotides and do not overlap with annotated protein-coding genes. LINC01696, like other lincRNAs, is transcribed but not translated into protein. LincRNAs are known to play roles in regulating the expression of neighboring genes with high tissue specificity, utilizing a variety of mechanisms including chromatin remodeling, modification of nuclear architecture, transcriptional regulation, and possibly enhancer-like functions.
