Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 173 variant 1 (LINC00173.v1) is a specific transcript of the LINC00173 gene that functions as a critical oncogenic driver in several malignancies, most notably lung squamous cell carcinoma (SQC) (NIH, 2020). It operates primarily as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), or 'molecular sponge,' which binds to and sequesters microRNAs such as miR-511-5p (NIH, 2020; MDPI, 2022). By sponging these microRNAs, LINC00173.v1 prevents the degradation of their target mRNAs, such as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGFA), thereby promoting tumor angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and metastasis (NIH, 2020; ResearchGate, 2020). Beyond its role in lung cancer, LINC00173.v1 is involved in nasopharyngeal carcinoma and has been linked to poor prognosis and increased chemoresistance to agents like cisplatin (NIH, 2022; MDPI, 2022). Interestingly, the parent gene LINC00173 can exhibit context-dependent roles, acting as a tumor suppressor in certain cancers like pancreatic and cervical cancer, which presents a challenge for therapeutic targeting (MDPI, 2022; ResearchGate, 2020). Experimental strategies to inhibit LINC00173.v1 include the use of antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), which have demonstrated the ability to suppress tumor growth and sensitize cancer cells to chemotherapy in preclinical models (NIH, 2020; NIH, 2022). This lncRNA also serves as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker, with its expression levels in serum and tissues correlating with disease progression and patient outcomes (NIH, 2020; Frontiers, 2021).
