Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1980 (LINC01980)

Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 1980 (LINC01980) is a member of the long non-coding RNA family, specifically a lincRNA, which is characterized by being over 200 nucleotides in length and not coding for protein. LINC01980 is increasingly implicated in oncogenic processes. It acts as a regulatory RNA involved in gene expression control in cancer, mainly through its function as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA), sponging specific microRNAs and affecting downstream mRNA and protein expression. LINC01980 is reported to be highly upregulated in several tumor types, including laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma, where its higher expression is associated with increased cell proliferation, tumor growth, invasion, metastasis, and often poorer prognoses.
