Overview

Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 2139 (LINC02139) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA, specifically a lincRNA) that does not code for a protein but plays a regulatory role in the cell. Recent studies have demonstrated that LINC02139 is upregulated in human gastric cancer tissues and cell lines, with high expression levels correlating with tumor progression, larger tumor size, deeper invasion, the presence of metastasis, and poor clinical stage. Mechanistically, LINC02139 exerts its oncogenic activity by directly interacting with and stabilizing XIAP, a key inhibitor of apoptosis; it does so by inhibiting XIAP ubiquitination and degradation, thereby supporting cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and inhibiting apoptosis. Knockdown of LINC02139 suppresses tumor growth and metastasis in experimental models, and its expression may be considered as a prognostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target in gastric cancer. There are currently no approved drugs or interventions that specifically target LINC02139.

Mechanism of action

LINC02139 binds and stabilizes XIAP (X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein) by inhibiting its ubiquitin-mediated degradation, thereby increasing XIAP protein levels, leading to enhanced cell survival, proliferation, migration, and inhibition of apoptosis in gastric cancer

Biological functions

Regulation of cell proliferationRegulation of cell migration and invasionModulation of apoptosisStabilization of target proteins (specifically XIAP)Likely involvement in post-transcriptional regulation
04

Disease associations

05

Safety considerations

None directly related to therapeutic targeting since no clinical interventions are documented targeting LINC02139 as of the searched period. Potential concerns in targeting lncRNAs include lack of specificity and off-target effects, but these are generic and not LINC02139-specific
