Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 2227 (LINC02227) is a long intergenic non-coding RNA (lincRNA), defined as an autonomously transcribed RNA transcript longer than 200 nucleotides that does not overlap with protein-coding genes. LINC02227 is part of the broader family of lncRNAs, characterized by their roles in regulating gene expression at multiple levels, including chromatin remodeling, transcriptional regulation, and RNA stabilization. Intergenic lncRNAs, such as LINC02227, can also function as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs), which regulate mRNA stability and translation by interacting with microRNAs. Although LINC02227 has been identified as differentially expressed in certain diseases, including as upregulated in epicardial adipose tissue from patients with coronary artery disease, there is currently no evidence that it acts as a direct therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or biomarker. Its biological and pathological functions remain under investigation, as is the case for most newly annotated lincRNAs.
