Overview

Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 2228 (LINC02228), also known as HIKER (hypoxia induced kinase-mediated erythropoietic regulator), is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) discovered as a critical regulator of erythropoiesis under hypoxic conditions. LINC02228 is significantly upregulated in patients with chronic mountain sickness (CMS, or Monge's disease) and is essential for the excessive erythropoietic response observed in this condition. Knockdown experiments demonstrate that LINC02228 exerts its effects through modulation of CSNK2B, the regulatory subunit of casein kinase 2, thereby controlling downstream transcriptional programs involved in red blood cell production. Functional in vivo and in vitro data support a central role for LINC02228/HIKER in mediating pathologic erythropoiesis at high altitude, but it is not an established drug target or receptor, nor are there known drugs targeting it directly[1][2][4][6].
