Overview

Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 284 (LINC00284, sometimes written as Linc00284) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) located in the intergenic regions of the human genome. It does not code for a protein product. LINC00284 is upregulated in multiple cancers, including colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and papillary thyroid cancer, where it is implicated in tumor development and progression. It exerts its effects primarily by acting as a molecular "sponge" for specific microRNAs (such as miR-27a and miR-3127-5p), relieving repression on their mRNA targets, which results in increased expression of key pro-tumorigenic proteins like c-Met and E2F7[1][3][5]. Elevated LINC00284 expression is associated with increased cell proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, and poor clinical outcomes in cancer patients. Recent studies have proposed circulating LINC00284 as a non-invasive biomarker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, but it is not currently recognized as a conventional drug target (e.g., receptor, enzyme, transporter), nor are there any approved or experimental drugs that directly target LINC00284 in clinical use.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (no drugs). Biologically, LINC00284 acts as a miRNA sponge (e.g., sponging miR-27a, miR-3127-5p), affecting downstream gene and protein expression such as c-Met.

Biological functions

Regulation of cell proliferationPromotion of cell invasion/migrationActing as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) or microRNA spongeModulation of angiogenesisRegulation of apoptosis and cell cycle
04

Disease associations

05

Safety considerations

Not applicable (no therapeutic agents targeting this lncRNA have reached the clinical or preclinical drug-development stage; potential off-target effects or specificity challenges common to lncRNA-targeting approaches generally).
06

Interacting drugs

None known or reported in the biomedical literature to date.
