This lncRNA does not encode a protein but exerts regulatory functions in gene expression networks. LINC00612 acts both in the cytoplasm, serving as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by sponging specific microRNAs, and in the nucleus by recruiting transcription factors (like phosphorylated STAT3) to gene promoters, notably regulating genes such as alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M). In the context of disease, LINC00612 is implicated in multiple cancers where it promotes cellular proliferation and invasion, and in COPD, where its downregulation is associated with increased apoptosis and inflammation.
