Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 689 (LINC00689) is a human long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene located on chromosome 7[1][5][7]. While annotated as non-coding, LINC00689 encodes a regulatory micropeptide called STORM (Stress- and TNF-α-activated ORF micropeptide)[2][4][5][6]. Translation of STORM is induced by phosphorylation of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF4E, a process regulated in response to TNF-α and stress signaling. This micropeptide is implicated in cellular stress response and potentially modulates cell signaling pathways by interacting with components of translation machinery and possibly modulating mRNA translation. LINC00689 and its peptide product are emerging as participants in processes including tumorigenesis, inflammation, and stress responses, but as of now, they are not established therapeutic targets or known to interact with specific drugs[2][4][6].
